The Saskatchewan NDP wants more scrutiny on what the government is spending its money on, and feels the way to do that is through reopening the Legislature so a budget can be reviewed. Finance Critic Trent Wotherspoon contends the SaskParty government wrote a blank cheque in the form of a $56-million special warrant but only specifying it would be spent on miscellaneous payments, unforeseen and unprovided for.
In response, a government representative explains in an email that the money is to administer the Temporary Wage Supplement going directly to eligible workers, but the federal government will reimburse an estimated $53.2-million. Jim Billington adds that in regards to the budget, the government agrees it needs legislative scrutiny and debate, so discussions between the government and opposition house leaders are ongoing.
