The Canada Border Services Agency kept invasive mussels from crossing into Canada from the United States at the end of March. It was the first discovery of an aquatic invasive species at a border inspecting this year. CBSA officers at the port of Regway sealed the Canadian-owned boat, to be inspected later, and notified the Ministry of the Environment. The travelers were required to self-isolate. It was during the inspection last week that the invasive mussels were found inside storage compartments. The ministry believes the mussels were likely picked up by the boat’s anchor and they are reminding boaters to carefully inspect accessories and the compartments where they are stored.
