A study to determine the functionality of Circle Drive West is nearing completion, but city administration is looking at holding a third open house for more public feedback.
The study, that began in Spring of 2019, focuses on improving Circle Drive functionality for intersections at Laurier Drive, Clancy Drive, Circle Drive & 22nd Street West and 22nd Street & Confederation Drive. A second open house on the study was held in January with feedback showing concerns on reduced access to 4 areas due to the proposed changes to the intersections.
Terry Schmidt, General Manger of Transportation and Construction says administration is now proposing a third engagement event for early 2021. The type of event will depend on COVID-19 restrictions.
The purpose of the event will be to inform the public of the new preferred plan based on feedback received .
Funding of $25,000 for the third open house will be obtained from a $250,000 capital project that pertained to a study on Circle Drive between 33rd Street West and Avenue C North.
The city’s Transportation committee heard from members of a group concerned about noise and speed on Spadina crescent, at Monday’s public meeting.
Roxanne Lind, with the Spadina Safe Committee, says they are hoping for preventative measures to calming the traffic and traffic noise on Spadina. She says they need to control and retrain traffic now before a young driver’s life is sacrificed. Lind explains Spadina Safe would like to see the speed limit reduced to school zone speeds due to the amount of children in the area, with heavy fines for rule breakers. Lind concluded by quoting a 2008 Kinsmen park plan which described a redesign of Spadina Crescent as a slow traffic, tree-lined promenade with a round about just before the university bridge.
Terry Schmidt, General Manger of Transportation and Construction says city council has recently moved to advocate the provincial government to regulate noise non-compliant vehicles. He adds that administration will soon start work on revising speed limit reviews in residential neighbourhoods. He says the next phase will review major corridors of the city that would include Spadina, and work will begin on that next year.
