With the unrest in the United States due to racial tensions, one Regina man is reminding people that racism exists here too.
The former member of the Regina Thunder is speaking out about racial profiling in Regina after a post in a private Facebook page falsely accused him of breaking into a vehicle that turned out to be his own.
Christian Mbanza is a grade seven teacher, recently filmed trying to get into his own car.
“I use an App to lock and unlock my car and I was waiting for the App to work, for whatever reason it wasn’t working, so I was just kind of standing there. And eventually I just dug into my back pack and got my keys and unlocked it from the keys. And then I took off on my bike. Literally three hours later I got a couple messages with those pictures.”
Mbanza made his own Facebook post about the pictures and the accusation, saying this is an example of how racial biases affect one’s judgement.
“That was kinda the point of my post. I wanted to bring awareness to people that there are people in Canada, in Regina, Saskatchewan today, who feel that they go through racial profiling but things like that are kind of swept under the rug.”
The post has been shared over two thousand times, and the support he’s received is something Mbanza says makes him proud to be part of the community. (CKRM Jun 2/20)
