The issues of racism and discrimination came up at the federal COVID-19 update in Ottawa.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland was asked if the government would choose this moment to lay out some affirmative action. She says it must be taken seriously in our country and she says she believes more needs to be done, and says they will have more to say about this in the future.
Ottawa is expanding COVID-19 protection in the transportation system. Transport Minister Marc Garneau says that includes requirements for face coverings. As of June 4th, existing aviation requirements for face coverings for passengers will extend to flight crew and to airport workers in the restricted area of a terminal, when they are not able to physically distance. Garneau says that will not extend to crews while on the flight deck of aircraft.
There are 92,748 COVID-19 cases in Canada, with 7,414 deaths and 50,684 recoveries.
Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says a lot of Canadians have taken up some positive habits, like hand hygiene, which are good things to carry forward. But other habits, like drinking alcohol and not being physically active, are not so healthy, and tam says healthier routines are needed to replace these ones.
