While we advocate for a healthier population by continuing to practice physical distancing, we can also advocate for a healthier planet on the United Nations’ 48th annual World Environment Day, June 5th.
A Saskatoon Registered Dietitian with Your Independent Grocer has some tips to make more sustainable food choices.
Sophia Khan says there are a number of ways we can have a positive impact on our environment through our food choices, for instance buying food that is in season and is local.
It helps local producers which means helping out the local economy and it reduces the carbon footprint because there is much less travel involved.
Khan suggests incorporating a day of the week to be ‘meatless’, choosing things like beans, lentils and tofu.
Another suggestion is to plan your meals before heading to the store and make a list, so you don’t buy things you already have, and in particular for produce which if you have too much could go bad and be wasted.
Also, when you’re shopping, don’t shy away from produce which has an irregular shape or has a slight blemish.
Khan says there is nothing wrong with these foods and if they aren’t bought, they will go to waste.
