A study into four of Saskatoon’s underpasses, that see the most criminal activity, has found 52% of crimes happen in one particular location.
The report was presented to Thursday’s Board of Police Commissioners and found in a 5 year time frame from January 2015 to December 31st, 2019 the underpass that connects the 300 block of Vancouver Avenue to the Confederation Park Plaza had 42 out of the 81 events during that time, or 52%.
In the middle overpass of Mount Royal to Massey Place is where 18.5% of the incidents occurred, 16% from Meadow Green to Fairhaven and 13.5% from the northern underpass from Mount Royal to Massey Place. Numerous crimes were tracked including robberies, threats, assaults, graffiti, mischief and arson.
In previous reports the Vancouver Avenue to Confederation Park Plaza underpass also had the majority of use by the public. The reports were forwarded to transportation, construction, and community services department, and Mayor Charlie Clark made a motion to send the report to city council for further discussion. He says he hopes there can be focus brought forward to make improvements.
