With a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the U-S, questions are again being raised about keeping the border between the two countries closed.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is leaning towards a cautious approach and while he acknowledges people in the tourism industry are anxious to get back to work, especially now that summer has started, he says reopening too quickly or carelessly may lead to a resurgence. The Prime Minister suggests if that happens it could force the federal government to go back into lockdown.
Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam says it’s a very dynamic situation which is re-evaluated monthly. She says if the numbers keep going up it will inform what is happening next at the border. There are 101,337 COVID-19 cases in Canada, with 8,430 deaths and 63,886 recoveries.
