The Governments of Saskatchewan and Alberta are teaming together to call on all provinces to make amendments to name change legislation.
Justice Minister Don Morgan says this would prohibit sex offenders from being able to change their names.
Saskatchewan was the first province to do so in February and now Alberta has done the same.
Morgan says, “We urge other provinces to join Saskatchewan and Alberta to enact similar changes that protect children and other vulnerable individuals from sex offenders trying to avoid scrutiny by changing their name.”
As it stands now, sex offenders can’t change their name in these 2 provinces, but Morgan explains that doesn’t prevent someone from moving to another jurisdiction and changing their name, or changing their name elsewhere and then moving to Saskatchewan or Alberta.
