The border with the U.S. will remain closed until at least July 21st. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says, given the situation in the U.S and other areas continuing with high case loads, the country need to remain vigilant. He says they will continue to consult with Americans on whats steps need to be taken into the month of August.
Trudeau says the federal response to the pandemic could have been better. He says there are things they could have done differently, and sooner. He says very little time has been spent analysing how things were done but that will be an ongoing part of the process for a potential second wave.
On another matter, the PM says the new NAFTA deal goes into effect on Wednesday. One remaining sore spot is tariffs on Canadian aluminum. He says Americans need Canadian aluminum. He says they don’t produce enough in the U-S to fill their domestic manufacturing needs. He says, if they slap a tariff on Canadian exports, the U.S will be hurting their own manufacturing base and economy.
These daily briefings are coming to an end. They will now shift to a few times per week.
