The numbers are in and they show the province ended the 2019-20 fiscal year with a deficit of $319 million. The government attributes that to a steep revenue decline in the fourth quarter, largely caused by the impact of COVID-19 on markets. Finance Minister Donna Harpauer says, prior to the pandemic, the province was on track for balanced budgets in both the last and current fiscal years. Now, the province is anticipating a deficit in the order of $2.4 billion in the current fiscal year. Harpauer says, “Our government will continue to assist Saskatchewan people through the pandemic while continuing to invest to stimulate the provincial economy and create jobs.”
