Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada will not allow sensitive military items to go to Hong Kong. This is in response to China imposing a new national security law on the territory.
Trudeau also announced the suspension of an extradition agreement with the semi-autonomous territory, and the updating of a travel advisor.
The Prime Minister says that Canada is a firm believer in the “One country, two system” framework. He says, his government will continue to support the many connections between Canada and Hong Kong while also standing up for its people.
The new Chinese law hands the central government almost unchecked legal power in the former British colony.
The “We” organization, which last week was awarded a federal contract to help youth volunteers find jobs, pulled out of the agreement this morning.
Prime Minister Trudeau was asked if his personal ties with the charity were responsible, but he dodged the question, saying. “There are things to reflect on; there are ways to do it better.” Trudeau admitted last week he’d worked with the charity in the past, and appeared at events with them voluntarily, and will continue to do so.
