The civic election is 4 months away, but the work behind the scenes has begun and Saskatoon’s election office is now open. Returning Officer, Scott Bastian says they typically need around 400 to 500 election officials, so right now they are working on a plan for when to bring workers on and how to train them.
He expects because of COVID-19, training for this election will mostly be online.
Bastian isn’t sure how the pandemic will change things during advance polls and on election day on November 9th because it’s too soon to know what the situation will be in the fall. He says they have been continuously engaging with the province for any direction on the municipal level.
The first call for workers is expected shortly, to get the key positions in place and then around September, the rest of the recruitment will get underway. There are 4 positions for the election – ward supervisors, poll supervisors, deputy returning officers and poll clerks.
