Medavie Health Services West says last week, they responded to an all-time high of 94 overdose calls. Last year, paramedics administered Narcan to 11 patients in May and 13 in June. This year, they have administered to 41 patients in May and 49 in June. Public Affairs Director Troy Davies says they did anticipate a slight rise in numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the mental health effect it’s having on residents, but the curve continues to rise. He says, “Responding to these calls daily, along with the new PPE requirements for Paramedics has increased the stress levels for our staff.” Paramedics also had their busiest week this year with 815 emergency calls.
