Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have been given $1.35 million in federal funding to study matters ranging from anthropology to philosophy. One study focuses on the impacts of oil sands extraction in northern Alberta on First Nations and Metis. Another project will document, describe and preserve the nuances of the Dene Suline language. The team will conduct a study into linguistic variations within the communities of Clearwater River Dene Nation and La Loche. These are among the last in Canada where the Dene language is still being used as a first language.
Another researcher is investigating how Canadian teachers make decisions on how best to help students who have learning disabilities.
