SGI says distracted driving was the focus of the June Traffic Safety Spotlight and police handed out 700 tickets; 605 for using a cellphone. 95 were for Driving Without Due Care and Attention. A first offence is good for a $580 fine. That increases to $14 hundred and $21 hundred for each subsequent offence within a year.
There were also 395 impaired driving offences, 7,803 tickets for aggressive driving and speeding, and 533 tickets for seatbelts and child restraints being incorrectly used or not at all. SGI says it’s hard to believe that in 2020, police caught this many people in one month who didn’t buckle up. The spotlight this month is on construction zones.
