The Federal Government is making available more than 19 billion dollars to help provinces and territories safely restart their economies. Over the next six to eight months, the money is to be used to increase testing and contact tracing of COVID-19, and support the capacity of health care systems, including services for people facing mental health challenges.
It is also to be used to procure personal protecting equipment for essential workers.
Municipalities are also to benefit so they can deliver essential services such as public transit. The federal government wants to see some of the money used to help workers such as ensuring adequate availability for safe child care along with income support for people who do not have paid sick leave, by providing workers with up to ten days of paid sick leave related to COVID-19. Provinces and territories will establish job protected sick leave legislation or regulation.
