A statement from the Saskatchewan Health Authority indicates it is reviewing the standards of care guidelines for long-term care facilities, but the official opposition considers the review an insult.
NDP Leader Ryan Meili says to do a proper review of long-term care, it must be a transparent, independent review. Meili would also like to see an Independent Seniors’ Advocate and legislated minimum care standards for long-term care.
He says, “We’ve heard from family after family that a lack of care standards and inadequate funding mean people are hurting.”
As an example, he described the experience of a 93 year old woman who was in long-term care in Foam Lake for 4 months. She told him she had to wait between 40 minutes to use the washroom on 6 occasions because staff are run off their feet.
