A female inmate was found unresponsive in her cell at the Pine Grove Correctional Centre in Prince Albert on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Corrections and Policing says she was declared dead around 7 p.m.
The death is not related to COVID-19.
The Prince Albert Police Service has begun an investigation and the Ministry will also be conducting an internal investigation.
Her death has also been referred to the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.
