The Saskatoon Fire Department fought multiple fires Saturday morning.
The first occurred at around 12:49 a.m when crews responded to a 911 call of a vehicle fire near a building in the 500 block of 5th Avenue North. After arriving firefighters found a GMC truck fully on fire with no occupants inside. After extinguishing the fire, minor heat damage was discovered to a building nearby. The truck is considered a total loss with estimated damage at approximately $15,000. A Fire investigator confirmed the fire to have originated in the engine compartment.
Then at around 1:43 a.m. firefighters responded to a 911 call reporting multiple garage fires in the 300 block of 10th Street East. Fire crews arrived to find two detached garages and a household garbage bin on fire as well as arching power lines that had fallen. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about 10 minutes, with the help of utility technicians, there were no injuries reported. Fire investigators confirmed the fire to be incendiary with a damage estimate of $30,000.
Then at approximately 7:25 a.m. the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting black smoke exiting a residential structure in the 800 block of 20th Street West. The first fire engine responded to find a small bungalow with smoke visible from the outside. All occupants were soon accounted for and confirmed to have safely evacuated as fire crews fought the fire and brought it under control and contained in a basement by 7:46 a.m. While performing searches, one deceased cat was located in the basement. A fire investigator has identified the cause to be accidental as a result of improper disposal of smoking materials. Damage is estimated at $25,000.
