Unless the provincial government believes the situation with COVID-19 has changed by the fall, the plan is not to make masks mandatory at Saskatchewan’s schools.
After reviewing the school divisions’ draft plans, the Education Response Planning Team developed guidelines in consultation with the Chief Medical Health Officer.
There are 4 different school scenarios that could be activated regionally or provincially.
Level 1, which is what is being planned for the beginning of the school year to date, is students and staff returning to school as close to normal as possible with additional health measures and precautions.
Moving to Level 2 would mean masks would be used, and they would be purchased by the ministry of education.
Level 3, if it became necessary, would mean reduced school capacity and could include hybrid learning models with in school and at home learning.
Level 4 is having all the learning back at home.
The guidelines include a dedicated quarantine area in every school, so if a student exhibits symptoms, they can be isolated until someone picks them up.
Buses will have assigned seating and students who live in the same household will be seated together, but where possible the Education Ministry is encouraging parents to transport their own children.
There will be separate doors to enter and exit and recess, lunch and other transition times will be staggered.
Teachers are being asked to utilize outdoor spaces for learning when possible and classrooms will be configured to minimize contact.
Extra-curricular activities such as indoor sports are allowed, as was announced in the second part of Phase 4 of the re-opening Saskatchewan plans, unless the guidelines change.
