The taxi industry is looking to increase the cost of a taxi ride in Saskatoon, but not by much.
Mark Wilson, Licensing and Permitting Manager for the city says the request would increase the cost of a 5 kilometre taxi ride from approximately $13.25 to $14.28, or 7.8%
The request was reviewed by at the Transportation Committee meeting with Wilson, explaining the total fare of a taxi is based off a minimum start amount called a drop rate, a distance rate and a wait time rate.
The taxi industry is not looking to change the current drop rate of $3.75 or the wait time rate but will look to change the distance rate instead.
Currently taxi drivers charge 25 cents for every 130 metres, after the first 130 metres are complete. The increase would see the charge change increase to 27 cents per every 125 meters.
Taxi rates in Saskatoon haven’t seen and adjustment for 4 years, with the last back in 2016.
