This is the 78th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid, Canada’s bloodiest day of the Second Word War. On August 19th, 1942, almost five thousand Canadians landed on the shores in occupied France. They, along with American and British allies were sent to test German defenses, damage enemy shipping and port facilities, and gather intelligence. But the raid turned into tragedy. In a statement, Prime Minister Trudeau says they lost the element of surprise and were met with intense enemy fire. After nine hours they were forced to withdraw. The Raid saw more than 3,350 Canadians killed, wounded or taken prisoner. But Trudeau says, the knowledge gained, was used in future attacks including D-Day.
