Statistics Canada says that during the first four months of the COVID-19 pandemic, 17 police services across Canada, reported a 16 per cent decrease in selected criminal incidents compared with the same period the year before. At the same time, the number of calls for service increased four per cent during the early months of the pandemic, particularly wellness checks by police and to attend domestic disturbances.
In Saskatoon, total assaults numbered 162 in March; fell to 125 in April and was up to 226 in June. Assaults against a peace or public officer stood at 10 in March but were up to 24 in June.
The total number of break-ins was 225 in March and fell to a low of 163 in May but was back up to 200 in June. Shoplifting though nose-dived from 111 in March to a low of 20 in April and May and back up to 42 in June.
Calls for service and domestic disturbance rose steadily from 612 in March to 815 in June. Suicide and attempted suicide calls grew from 186 in March to 222 in June. Overdose calls went from 11 in March to 26 in June.
