It’s September first and that means school zones are back. They are in effect Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from September to June, including Stat holidays. The maximum speed in a school zone is 30 kilometers per hour. If you slip past that maximum, the fine starts at $170.
You should also note that U-turns are restricted in school zones. Drivers are encouraged to drive around the block rather than attempt a U-turn. The fine for making an illegal U-turn in a school zone is $90.
At the meeting of city council Monday, Director of Transportation Jay Magus, said there haven’t been discussions with police on if they will enforce the zones this week. But he says, as a driver, he advises people follow the rules of the road and the signage appropriately. Councillor Randy Donauer added that it is important to get the word out to the public that school is in session, the bylaw is active and should be obeyed.
