The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is asking hunters to take extra precautions in high risk areas this hunting season.
Executive Director, Darrell Crabbe, says especially when ATV or other vehicles are involved, they recommend staying on roads and trails at every opportunity.
Crabbe says they should carry a fire extinguisher , just in case something does start up. He explains whether it’s an ATV manifold getting hot, or something throwing a cigarette out, hunters should be prepared take every opportunity to not be part of the problem.
Other recommendations from the SWF include avoiding unnecessary vehicle idling and always gaining permission from landowners before going onto property.
Crabbe says hunters in Saskatchewan have always done a very good job, and are often the eyes and ears for watching for wildfires, but this is just a reminder to respectful of landowners and their concerns.
