The new, permanent Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan site it more than that.
Artistic Producer Will Brooks explains that when they are not using the site, it will be open to the public and open for other events that would like to utilize the area.
The facility opens to the public on September 14th so you can have a look at the permanent amphitheatre that will still have a tented enclosure in the summer, and permanent buildings for the ticket booth, Sir Toby’s Tavern and the actors’ dressing rooms.
It’s also open to the public in the sense that Meewasin Trail winds through the back end of the site, right by the riverbank with what Brooks says is the best view in the city.
The site will be open year round to be utilized not just by Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, but by other groups that might like to host an event there, other than during the Shakespeare season.
One of the actors who has performed many times on the site, Josh Beaudry, says from an actor’s point of view, the permanent structure with the tented enclosure will be much safer for the actors, crew and the audience members.
Another advantage is not needing the time at the beginning of the season to do all the setting up work of all of the buildings, meaning the actors and crew can get to work a bit sooner.
