The 2020 RCMP Memorial Service is moving online.
Honouring fallen members is woven into the training program at RCMP Academy, Depot (depp-oh) Division as cadets walk on streets that bear the names of the fallen and learn to march in front of the RCMP Cenotaph.
But the most visible act of remembrance is the RCMP National Memorial Service held the second Sunday of September.
Due to COVID-19 the 2020 Memorial Service will be a closed ceremony. Unlike Previous years, only two cadet troop and critical staff will attend the shortened program.
The decision not to add names to the Cenotaph, Honour Roll and Memorial Wall was made in consultation with families of recently fallen members that being Constable Allan Poapst and Constable Heidi Stevenson. The RCMP will plan a formal Memorial Service when COVID-19 restrictions are no longer in effect.
Constable Poapst was an on duty officer who died on Manitoba’s Perimeter Highway last December when a truck crossed the median and collided with his cruiser. Constable Stevenson was one of 21 victims killed in the April shooting rampage in Nova Scotia.
