A volunteer firefighter in Saskatoon, will be creating awareness and generating research funding, to fight a deadly blood cancer this weekend
Ray Wilgenbusch was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2014 and says the disease affects blood plasma cells in bone marrow and when it grows it steals calcium from your bones.
Wilgenbusch says a lot of people are diagnosed because of a limb failure, he has 3 collapsed vertebrae as a result of the disease, which caused the initial back pain. He recommends if you are personally experiencing a lot of fatigue, bone pain, or bathroom issues, to see a doctor, especially if there is a family history of multiple myeloma.
After his diagnosis , doctors gave Wilgenbusch two years to live if he didn’t undergo treatment. Since then has underwent chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant and radiation and is currently in remission.
Wilgenbusch and his family will be marching in the 3rd annual Saskatoon Multiple Myeloma March on Sunday from 1pm until 3pm.
This year’s march has been modified to help stop the spread of covid-19 as participants are encouraged to walk in their own neighbourhoods.
