Brian Shalovelo is a recently retired police officer who is a graduate of Business Administration at the University of Saskatchewan and of Public Sector Management from Dalhousie University.
One of his priorities is getting back to the basics of utilities, infrastructure, transportation, fire and police when it comes to spending. He won’t promise a zero per cent tax increase, saying that you can’t just tear up City contracts with unions and businesses, but Shalovelo believes Council needs to take a hard look at what the priorities are with what he calls a ‘zero-based budgeting approach.’
Another priority is a safer Saskatoon. The Ward 8 candidate says in the past 20 months violent crime has increased 18 per cent and there have been 28 murders. Saskatoon has one of the highest rates of victimization in the country and one of the lowest officer-per-capita ratios, so Shalovelo understands there are some major challenges ahead.
