This candidate profile is on Aron Cory who is running for city council in Ward 1.
Cory is a former rancher, trained PhD scientist and owns a small business, if elected he would like to see more support for community associations and grassroots initiatives. He thinks this could have an enormous impact on the quality of life in the city, while helping out with some of the social welfare factors that he says are plaguing Saskatoon. Cory would encourage economic development within the city, through new innovations and programs. He says business bylaws should be reviewed, suggesting they are often poorly written, restrictive and discourage people from opening small businesses. Cory would also like to see smaller markets and farmer’s markets throughout the city.
Cory wants to invest in waste management, by beginning to produce industries that help to up-cycle, recycle and down-cycle waste into saleable products.
Cory strives to make city council more accountable, referencing the Remai Art Gallery going over budget as a lack of transparency. He thinks a city councillor’s pay should be linked more to city metrics than from provincial guidelines.
Cory says what he brings to the table is experience in student politics, sitting on the boards of several charities, as well as community and research associations. Cory suggests as a trained scientist he has the ability to look at complex problems, analyze them and come up with innovative solutions. Something he feels is currently sorely lacking at city hall.
