A grant awarded to a La Ronge high school teacher is intended to promote plant based eating.
Cruise Slater teaches at Churchill Community School and says he decided to seek out the grant due to the interest expressed by his students around being more environmentally responsible in terms of food production and food choices.
They’re going to use the money to build a hydroponics system inside the Churchill Community
School. He says they will start with planting simple leafy greens likely this week such as lettuce and then move on to Bok Choy, Swiss Char, some different herbs and generally a leafy green that doesn’t need a lot of sunlight. Slater has also conducted innovative projects like sending a weather balloon to space and implementing a robotics program.
The call for entries for the 2021 Plant Project program will be released next spring.
