Lloyd Saunders High School Athletic Scholarship Award
Each year The Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon presents the Lloyd Saunders High School Athletic Scholarship Award to graduating Saskatoon high school athletes. The $2,000.00 scholarship is designated to further the recipient’s education at the post-secondary level. Outstanding high school athletic involvement, community involvement and community service are some of the key selection criteria.
The Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2020 Lloyd Saunders Kinsmen Scholarship are Josh Carbonel, a graduate of Bethlehem High School, and Jaymee Stupak, a graduate of Tommy Douglas Collegiate.
Josh Carbonel graduated with a Grade 12 diploma from Bethlehem High School in June of 2020. He is currently enrolled in Arts and Science at Redeemer University majoring in Health Science. Josh plans to continue his athletic career the Redeemer Varsity Basketball team.
Josh is a multi-sport athlete, competing at a high level in basketball, volleyball, and track & field. Josh was an integral part of Bethlehem’s athletic programs while being named the Most Valuable Player numerous times on multiple teams, and finally being named team captain in his final year with the Bethlehem Basketball team. While the coronavirus cut short his plans to participate in track and field his final year, the previous three years he was a key team player on the 4 x 400m relay team and medaled in grades 9 to 11.
According to Josh’s teacher and coach, Dan Kozun, Josh is a responsible hard-working student and athlete and “the best basketball player we have ever had at our school.” Dan also speaks highly of Josh’s leadership skills on and off the court: “He displays, in all aspects, what a student athlete personifies.” Josh was also on the Principal’s Honour Roll for all four of his years at Bethlehem High School.
Congratulations Josh!
Jaymee Stupak graduated from Tommy Douglas Collegiate in June of 2020. She is currently enrolled in Kinesiology majoring in Exercise and Sport Studies at the University of Saskatchewan with the goal of a four-year degree. She is still involved in athletics as an athlete with Alumni Pom and Select Softball.
Jaymee’s athletic career has been dominated by pom, dance and softball. She has been an integral part of Tommy Douglas’s dance team and the Tommy Douglas softball academy. She also played on the senior volleyball team, competitively figure skated, and was a track and field athlete as well. If that wasn’t enough, Jayme was able to gain guaranteed entrance to the University of Saskatchewan with an exceptional academic record, while also volunteering with coaching Softball Timbits.
Coach and teacher Carolyn Parr-Hillestad says of Jayme, “an excellent student, a hard-working athlete, and a spirited and conscientious leader.” Jaymee demonstrates a strong work ethic as a part of the team and in the classroom. “I watched as Jaymee developed confidence, leadership, and improved technique over the two years I was able to coach her. She worked hard to improve some very difficult skills, which allowed her to be in a featured moment of our routine this year.” Says Carolyn. For Jaymee’s life-long dedication to athletics, her strong work ethic and sportsmanship, her academic excellence, and outstanding leadership qualities, she is certainly a worthy recipient of the SSSAD Lloyd Saunders Kinsmen Scholarship.
Congratulations Jaymee!
SSSAD would like to thank The Kinsmen Club for their continued support of high school athletes in Saskatoon.
These awards will be announced at the Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner. The official scholarship award presentations will be made to the recipients at their graduating schools.
