There were over seven thousand fewer adults in correction centres in May in Canada compared with February. That was a 19 per cent drop as governments across the country took steps to contain COVID-19. Statistics Canada says, from May to June, the steep decline started easing.
In the 13 provincial and territorial correctional service programs there were different types of change in numbers from May to June. For Alberta, there was no change in the average daily count of adults in custody. For five of the jurisdictions, there was a decrease. For the remaining seven, including Saskatchewan, the daily count rose.
In Saskatchewan specifically, the average daily count fell four per cent April to May and rose four per cent May to June. But, comparing June to February, the count was down here by 23 per cent.
