While overall crime is decreasing in Prince Albert, violent crime is on the rise. In 2019, there were six homicides in the city. Police have made arrests and laid charges in all of those. But, violent crime has been trending higher in the community since 2003. The Police Department says they investigate more files each year involving guns, weapons, drugs, and violence. While the department says they continue to focus on public safety concerns, they are also advocating and supporting efforts to address root-cause issues including poverty, mental health and addictions.
Statistics Canada will be releasing the 2019 Crime severity Index this week. In 2018, Prince Albert ranked 6th overall among about 300 communities with core populations over 10 thousand. That was a slight decrease in overall crime when compared to the previous two years. In 2017, Prince Albert ranked 4th overall and third in 2016.
