It’s not the year to host a Remembrance Day ceremony at SaskTel Centre thanks to COVID-19, so the team behind the Canada Remembers projects has come up with an alternative. S pokesperson Brian Swidrovich says it’s unfortunate that Canada’s largest indoor Remembrance Day ceremony, which each year sees between seven and nine-thousand people had to be cancelled but they have devised a free block long drive-by tribute on Hangar Road, in front of the Saskatchewan Aviation Museum, off Avenue C.
There are large pictures featuring World War II, Canadians in Korea, First Nation Veterans, female ferry pilots from World War II, Regina Rifles and photos of the 158 soldiers who died in Afghanistan, among others.
Swidrovich considers it quite moving and he hopes if families check out the drive-by, they may have discussions about Canada’s involvement in global conflicts and possibly get home and look up a bit more of the history.
Although you can’t replace the annual Remembrance Day ceremony, he wonders if this drive-by concept may be something to pursue on a bigger scale down the road. The free drive-by is open now through Remembrance Day.
