The Saskatoon Police Service will be continuing a enforcement initiative in the Downtown Business Improvement District once again Wednesday.
Acting Staff Sergeant , Andrew Kiesman says the initiative includes additional beat officers who will provide education by enforcement, with little to no tolerance for any bylaws or provincial and federal statutes that are violated. He says another large part of the initiative is being visible downtown, and it will be a time to build relations with the business district and vulnerable people downtown.
The initiative runs until Saturday, just like it did last week. Kiesman says they will be looking for anything from street bylaws to traffic bylaws like jaywalking, provincial statutes that encompass things like open alcohol or cannabis in public, and federal statues which include anything under the criminal code of Canada.
Last week officers wrote upwards of 12 bylaw tickets, in four days with an increase of beat officers, and in some cases that lead to enforcement of provincial or federal warrants.
Kiesman adds it’s an overall downtown initiative and while the Lighthouse is included in the area, it will not be a specific target for officers.
Kiesman explains initiatives like this occur all year long, but this one was sparked from increased public attention for an increased police presence down town.
