While encouraging people to stay home and hunker down as the much talked about winter storm settles over much of Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon says they are focusing on keeping roads cleared so residents can make it to work and make it to the polls to vote in the civic election Monday. In addition to the expected 10 to 15 centimetres of snow the region experienced Saturday, there was freezing rain that has created extreme icy conditions. That freezing rain descended on many areas of the province and between ongoing snowfall, high winds, and icy roads, travel is not recommended on highways in almost every corner of central and southern Saskatchewan. Only three accidents were reported between midnight and noon Sunday in Saskatoon but that was expected to escalate as the winter storm continues to wallop the province. The blizzard advisory applies to a significant area stretching from the Alberta border to almost two-thirds of the way eastward across the province and just south of Saskatoon. A blizzard is declared when winds of 40 km/hr or greater are expected to reduce visibility to 400 metres or less in blowing snow for at least four hours. Highway 1 is closed from the Alberta border to Gull Lake. Travel Not Recommended Sunday: Saskatoon East including Radisson; Swift Current; Moose Jaw to Regina; Kindersley; Wakaw; Yorkton, Moosomin and Whitwood areas.
