The City of Saskatoon’s snow clearing service doesn’t usually extend to residential neighbourhoods, but because of the unusually large amount of snow all at once, the City has decided to restore mobility not just on the priority streets but on all roads, including residential areas.
General Manager of Transportation and Construction, Terry Schmidt, says the City recognizes the challenges people are facing, so they are going to throw everything they have to clear the snow and get people moving around again.
The residential snow clearing will begin after the higher traffic streets are complete.
Crews will work through the residential areas, beginning with the most impacted.
There is more snow in the forecast though, so Schmidt emphasizes if that happens, crews will have to go back to the higher traffic streets and then come back to the residential areas.
As of Tuesday afternoon, road crews have been able to open at least one traffic lane on all major and secondary roads.
Efforts continue on the highest traffic streets to make them all passable, then returning to plow curb-to-curb, sand, salt and de-ice, because there is a layer of ice underneath all that snow.
