Ahead of the government announcing new regulations to stem the spread of COVID-19, healthcare organizations sent out a news release listing what they would like to see.
Saskatchewan Medical Association president, Dr. Barb Konstantynowicz, applauds the measures announced on Friday, and has three other recommendations.
The first is mandatory masks in indoor public spaces across Saskatchewan, not just in communities of 5,000 or more.
The second is targeted closing of bars and nightclubs until the surge is blunted, which is something that other jurisdictions around the world are doing, and the third is redoubling the efforts to test and trace.
Dr. Konstantynowicz explains that pandemics get out of control because of the time lag between getting a test and getting the results.
She would like to see the province using the new test strips that can produce results within 15 minutes.
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation would like to have seen more action to bend the curve of rising COVID-19 cases downwards.
President Patrick Maze says the measures leave staff and students in elementary schools and schools with populations of less than 600 vulnerable and exposed.
He would like masks to be mandatory for all staff and students, including Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3 and for all school divisions to immediately move to level 3, instead of just the larger high schools.
