The Indigenous Joint Action Coalition has organized a candlelight vigil tonight to remember Neil Stonechild. The 17 year old died 30 years ago today, believed a victim in what was later dubbed ‘starlight tours’. He froze to death on the outskirts of Saskatoon and his death as well as revelations from Darrell Night led to an inquiry that was instrumental in making changes within the Saskatoon Police Service.
The police service was accused of arresting Indigenous people, usually men, driving them to the outskirts of the city at night in the winter where they would take their clothing, leaving them to walk home. It was -28 degrees Celsius the night Neil Stonechild died. In 2003, Minister of Justice in Saskatchewan struck a judicial commission to inquire into the death of Neil Stonechild. The inquiry wrapped up final arguments on May 19, 2004.
The candlelight vigil tonight is at 7 p.m. in front of White Buffalo Youth Lodge to remember Neil Stonechild and his family. Organizers stress the event is outside, you are asked to dress warmly, wear a mask, as well, candles and PPE will be available on site. Social distancing protocols will be in effect.
