While anti-maskers complain about the government doing too much to stop COVID-19, some professionals in the medical field are clamoring for more to be done. Medical students have written a letter to Premier Scott Moe, Health Minister Paul Merriman and Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab, outlining concerns about the exceptional growth of the virus. They have also proposed measures to try and get the pandemic under control. The students note that since November 1st, there has been a 350 per cent increase in active cases and a 250 per cent increase in COVID-related hospitalizations. The students would like to see increased testing capacity; a public education campaigns targeted at COVID-19 misinformation; temporary closure of recreational facilities and nightclubs; financial and other supports so that business can lockdown without risking bankruptcy; Once the growth is controlled, an increase in contact tracing capacity; and, establishing a working group including government and medical experts to create a strategic plan for reopening, future outbreaks, and rises in case numbers.
The letter has been signed by over 100 medical students.
Previously, Saskatchewan’s NDP leader wrote to the Premier, advocating for a multi-sectoral task force which would also include municipal and Indigenous leaders, education, business and labour, community-based organizations and the Official Opposition. The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation has also called on the Sask. Party government to increase efforts to limit community spread of COVID-19. and 260 Saskatchewan physicians wrote to the Premier making a similar plea.
