A report on energy saving policies of Canadian provinces puts British Columbia in top spot with Saskatchewan in last. Carleton University based research organization, Efficiency Canada, says we bring up the rear because we are lagging in energy efficiency program savings and spending. The study looked at five categories including programs, enabling, buildings, transport and industry. Saskatchewan ranked at the bottom, or near the bottom, in three. It was about middle of the pack in Buildings and scored a five in Industry which was right below the top ranked provinces which scored a six.
In the province’s favour, the report notes that Saskatchewan’s planned Climate Action Centre will provide coordinated support for climate change-related projects in municipalities, including energy efficiency projects. The government announced $181 million to support energy efficiency improvements to public buildings.
The paper says Saskatchewan has only one strength, that’s in electricity capacity savings. It says we need improvement in energy efficiency programs.
