The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says it has major concerns over a COVID-19 outbreak in a Saskatoon mail processing plant.
The CUPW confirmed Saturday that 18 CUPW members, working at the Saskatoon Mail Processing Plant have tested positive for COVID-19. Reporting that several of the members are experiencing mild to moderate symptoms, while others are experiencing severe symptoms.
In a written statement, Julee Sanderson, 1st National Vice-President says the CUPW believes that physical distancing protocols were not properly adhered to and with an increase in volumes and the need for additional staff the requirement for physical distancing was not enforced by management. Giving an example that the parcel sortation area was overstaffed.
The CUPW called on Canada Post to prioritize physical distancing saying “this priority cannot be shifted to cram more people into work areas.”
CUPW are also demanding that Canada Post ensures that all sections of mail processing plants, on all shifts, be inspected regularly to ensure that all safety measures, including physical distancing, are being complied with.
