The role of Saskatoon’s municipal government when it comes to COVID-19 measures will be addressed at Monday’s Governance and Priorities committee meeting.
A report from city administration was created to clearly state that Provincial Governments have the authority in health matters, but cities can pass bylaws in relation to the safety, health, and welfare of the people and the protection of people and property. The city of Saskatoon at minimum has to comply with provincial health orders but the city can put in additional measures for any city owned facilities or services. The report refers to Saskatoon’s decision to require masks on public transit, which was instituted well before the province’s health order making them mandatory.
If the report is passed to city council, administration says the aim will be to continue to monitor provincial health orders, while regularly updating council and ensuring that civic services are provided in a way that meets provincial requirements. The meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will also see the Board of Police Commissioners revised budget reviewed for the first time.
