Saskatchewan’s Court of Queen’s Bench jury trials will be postponed even longer. The court announced on Monday that all jury trials scheduled to begin before March 31st are postponed as a result of the pandemic.
At last word the Court had earlier postponed jury trials scheduled to begin before the end of the year. If you were summoned for jury selection before March 31st, you should not attend. There were 19 jury trials scheduled between January 1st and March 31st.
Unless brought forward sooner on a judge’s order, postponed matters will be spoken to on the date originally set for the trial to begin. The accused could re-elect trial by judge alone in which case it would proceed as scheduled. Or it could be a adjourned to a later date.
Some of the considerations that came into play when deciding a further postponement include jury trials mean more people physically present in the courtroom each day of the trial and typically draw members of the public from a fairly broad geographic area, particularly while selecting a jury.
