The CEO of the United Way of Saskatoon & Area says because of the pandemic, there is even more need, but there is also more generosity.
Sheri Benson wasn’t sure what to expect with their annual fundraising campaign, understanding that workplaces, businesses, unions and individuals wouldn’t be able to have the same type of events to raise money. Everything went virtual, and Benson says although they decided not to have a goal this year, they have raised over $4-million, which was last year’s total. She feels those that are in a position to give understand that people are struggling and the need is even greater, so they have been ever more generous.
Benson notes that when something hits close to home, something like a pandemic which affects everyone, those who can be generous, are. She says, “When the community needs you, people step up. We have seen that time and time again in Saskatoon.”
United Way supports local charities that deal with social and economic issues like poverty, homelessness and racism.
