With images of protesters storming the American capital in Washington still fresh in everyone’s mind, new statistics around gun sales show that in a country already awash with weapons, Americans are arming themselves like never before.
American Rebel, a wholesaler and retailer of items like safes and concealed carry apparel, says demand for guns, ammunition and gun safes are at an all-time high; it points to the highest number ever of background checks conducted by the FBI last month. The previous monthly record was set in June during the riots in the aftermath of the George Floyd killing in Minnesota.
The Small Arms Survey generated by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, estimates that firearms in civilian possession in the United States numbers over 393 million. That’s greater than the number of people in the country at 328 million. Of those hundreds of millions of guns, slightly over a million are registered.
American Rebel says that, as more Americans arm themselves, the interest in safes for storage of weapons is also at an all-time high. Company CEO Andy Ross says a large number of new home construction offers a safe room to serve as a vault for guns and other valuables as well as a safe place to go in case of a home invasion.
