A very challenging year has come to an end, but it wasn’t all bad news in 2020.
As an example, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation almost doubled the amount of land it usually acquires in a year. Director of Habitat Lands, Darren Newberry, says the SWF usually gets through purchase or donation about 1500 acres of land a year, and in 2020 they were able to acquire more than 2500 acres of wildlife habitat.
The wildlife conservation organization also received $200,000 in donations.
Newberry says they learned to embrace digital technology more to keep in contact with members and he expects that will continue in the future.
One of the more recent donations of land was 800 acres of prairie grassland near Griffin, which is in the southeast corner of the province. Newberry says native prairie grasslands are internationally recognized as one of the most at risk ecosystems in the world and it’s home to many species at risk.
