There may be fewer vehicles on the road because many people are working from home and most of us are following the guidelines around COVID-19 to stay home, but CAA Saskatchewan reminds drivers that the same safety rules that have always been suggested in school zones still apply.

Spokesperson Christine Niemczyk urges both drivers and pedestrians to eliminate anything that might be a distraction.  Although it’s illegal to drive while using a cell phone, Niemczyk says they can also be distracting when you are walking if you are texting, checking out social media or having a conversation.
She reminds everyone that it only takes a second to be distracted, so focus on the task at hand.

In school pick-up zones, drivers should keep in mind that children may dart out between cars and students could also be obscured by tall snowbanks and vehicle exhaust.  Niemczyk says the goal with CAA’s tips is to keep everyone safe.
